Since we are on the subject of a Planeopnik I figured I'd introduce you all to the Jet that got me into aviation. The Grumman F-14

Sometimes it's cool if only because your bird is the biggest...the F14's size is menacing in comparison to 'small' jets like the T38 and F16

I believe it was the only jet in the Navy capable of carrying the Phoenix missile (one bad ass weapon)

It was. The f-111 was designed to be able to, but they cancelled the naval variant.

I love that plane. And not just from Top Gun. Two massive engines, wings that FUCKING MOVE, missiles galore.

Giant engines, good aero, classic design, I'd say the F-14 is the Shelby Daytona of the skies.

An F-14 put on the single most impressive aerial demonstration I've ever seen. This coming from a former Air Force guy...

Now for a question I cannot hold in any longer *raises hand like an 8 year old in school that needs to use the bathroom*.

What are those "pulses" in the exhaust that you see and what causes them. I have my thoughts, but am not sure. Since we have several knowledgeable Oppos about this type of stuff, I figured it was a good time to ask.

I am not an aeronautical engineer, or a physicist specializing in fluid dynamics...

But those are called "shock diamonds"... from Wikipedia:

Shock diamonds (also known as Mach diamonds , Mach disks , Mach rings , doughnut tails or thrust diamonds ) are a formation of standing wave patterns that appears in the supersonic exhaust plume of an aerospace propulsion system, such as a supersonic jet engine , rocket , ramjet , or scramjet , when it is operated in an atmosphere. The diamonds are formed from a complex flow field and are visible due to the ignition of excess fuel. Mach diamonds (or disks) are named for Ernst Mach , the physicist who first described them. [1]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shock_dia…

Basically, the afterburners create so much pressure and engine exhaust velocity (which translates to thrust) that as the exhaust velocity at supersonic speeds diffuses into the ambient air, it creates those visible standing shock wave patterns in the glowing-hot exhaust gasses.

SR-71 engines are famous for them... P&W J58 engines are even more powerful than most air-superiority fighters.

Pretty sure I am required by law to post this video to any F-14 discussion. Such a gorgeous, capable, plane. A shame to see her retired so soon.

I think my favorite thing about the Tomcat is that it actually turned out to be a more capable strike aircraft than the multirole Hornet that was meant to replace it. It had a longer range and loiter capability, it could get to the danger zone faster (sorry, I had to), and it could carry heavier ordinance, IIRC.

Easily my favorite "normal" plane (SR-71 obviously topping the fantasy hangar). And I'm not afraid to credit a little movie called Top Gun for helping me notice how awesome it was. My obsession with planes built steadily after that.

Anyone other Tomcat fan hate the F-15 somewhat irrationally? Just me? I always preferred Navy planes anyway but the Eagle seemed like a non-swept wing F-14 that just wasn't as cool.
